Shirakawa is a village located in Ono District, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. It is best known for being the site of Shirakaa-go, a small, traditional village showcasing a style of buildings called gassho-zukuri. As of July 2011, the village has an estimated population of 1,734. The total area is 356.55 km.The village is located near Takayama, in Gifu. It is one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites.

Gassho-zukuri are perhaps most recognizable and distinguished for their high, peaked roofs. A steeply peaked roof allows rain and snow to fall straight off it, preventing water from getting through the roof into the home, and to a lesser extent preventing the thatch itself from getting too wet and beginning to rot in those area of heavy snowed villages in Japan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirakawa,_Gifu_%28village%29
